The model railroader would also need signal lights, switch engines and a tower plus other accessories used in a switching facility.

In an engine maintenance yard, a model railroader will need a variety of engines. A modern day facility would need a reasonable number of diesel’s as well as cross tracks, repair facilities, and a fuel depot. Exploring the past, a maintenance facility will need a turntable, a number of different types of steam locomotives and tenders, plus water towers, a coal supply area and the other pieces of equipment that were used in the past. As a model railroader, there’s a tremendous amount of history available to get ideas from. Perhaps you would choose to build a city scene based on commuter rails, it can be electric or diesel, elevated or on the ground. A model railroader would have to decide which one to build or just have fun making both electric and diesel, elevated and on the ground. As a model railroader you have an amazing variety of locomotive replicas of all eras available to you. Everything from the steam powered locomotives of the wild west when train speeds were an amazing thirty to forty miles per hour, to today’s hydro electric diesel freight trains that travel across the country at seventy miles per hour and turbine powered bullet trains that can reach speeds of one hundred miles per hour and more. When you think about it, the real trains may not have as many accessories available to them as a model railroader has.
